Apple Music
Independent Project
SharePlay+, a new way to listen to music with friends.
Just enter a code, join the queue, and start listening

Disclaimer: This is not an existing feature of Apple Music. This is a personal UX design project with the goal of adding more community-oriented features to the app.
Goal
This project was motivated by both my personal desire for better social features for the Apple Music app, as well as my knowledge of other user's pain points with the app. These issues were further uncovered through the use of surveys, which allowed us to gain a greater knowledge of what real users were struggling with while using the platform. This ultimately led to SharePlay+, which is a group queue feature which allows multiple people to control the music queue in any given scenario.

Research
First, I started with sending out surveys using Google Forms and contacting friends, family, and my outer social circle to fill out the form. I also looked into competitors and what features they currently had and were being used often. Furthermore, I created user personas which represent the most common users based on my survey results.

The Sound Engineer
The Music Reviewer
- find new popular music
- listen to music with friends
- discover concerts in their area
- discover and review new music
- systematically listen to music
- listen to a wide array of music
- listen to music in high quality
- find inspiration in new and old
- enjoy music alone
- amount of music gets overwhelming
- lack of sort options in playlists and library
- UI is slow at times
- HQ music takes a lot of storage
- playback occasionally malfunctions
- slow Internet

- it's hard to queue songs
when a lot of people are asking
to queue
- it's difficult to hear about new
album releases
Survey results
-
a majority of Apple Music users (63.6%) have considered switching to competing platforms
-
users want more feedback about their listening habits and want to share them
-
more social features while listening, like Spotify's Group Queue feature
-
lack of sorting options within playlists as well as lack of optimization/customization
-
playlists are hard to find for some users
Define
Synthesizing what I’ve gleaned from my research, and with this new feature in mind, I constructed a user persona that represents feedback heard from actual users from my survey responses. Referring back to this user persona during the design process keeps me aligned with user goals and helps me avoid/solve the problems users run into.

About
Joe has been working in the tech industry straight out of college. He lives in San Francisco, CA with his girlfriend and pet dog. Chen is an organized and calculated individual and works diligently at his software engineering job at LinkedIn. His job gives him flexibility in his work environment, so sometimes Joe decides to work from home. When working remotely, Joe sometimes turns to music to help him concentrate while working long hours. He loves going to live events and keeping up with the latest music trends and artists. Joe also likes talking about music with his friends and playing music together while they hang out.

JOB STORY
The "job stories" framework will give us a way to define our potential feature.
"When I'm hanging out with friends, I want a better way to queue music with people in a group."

Wireframes
After creating a sitemap displaying task flow, I made some low-fidelity wireframes of the SharePlay queue feature and how it would be accessed through the app. I decided to place it under the long press of songs, which is where SharePlay was already located.

The challenge was to use Apple Music’s up-to-date design patterns, so the user would already know how to use the new feature without thinking since using the rest of the app is an uniform experience.

Design
I first researched various aspects of Apple Music UI and then created high-fidelity wireframes using Figma.

Test
I created a prototype through Figma and conducted user testing to make sure that the feature made sense to users and to see if various types of people could complete the task.
Task Completion Rate:
100%
Tasks:
- find a song
- long press the song
- open up SharePlay menu
- successfully share code with friend
Conclusion
This project taught me how to work within the constraints of an existing application and design within an existing ecosystem, relying on already present design patterns and components. Since users are already familiar with these conventions, breaking conventions could damage usability.
One challenge I overcame during research was learning how to gain insight into what users need without asking them directly (“What feature do you wish this app had?”), since that leads to wishful thinking. Indirectly feeling out for user pain points is a more effective method of learning what problems users need to be solved and how to best solve them.
Assumptions are fine to take note of but untested assumptions are dangerous and counterproductive to the design process. When I began this project I had assumed people wanted more social and sharing features with music, and my responses confirmed that. Through this, implementing a social feature such as SharePlay facilitates more social music listening, which has already seen success on other platforms such as Spotify and Youtube. Music consumption varies widely across users, and providing features to increase social consumption allows for greater enjoyment.
